The problem with bubble wrap: Just a surface-level solution
Unless you have already switched entirely to paper protective packaging that are in-line with your organization’s sustainability goals and guidelines, chances are you are familiar with *pop*pop*pop*… yup, bubble wrap. It’s known to many packers and fulfillment personnel as essential and is a packaging staple. But is it the best solution for protective packaging? The short answer is no.
Material Overuse: Used for basic surface scratch protection, traditional bubble wrap gains “added” impact resistance and layered protection when multiple layers of it is wrapped over a product, sometimes going so far as to wrap four or five layers. We can’t blame packers as no one wants a damaged or broken product reaching the customer. So, why not better safe than sorry as I wrap four, five, six times over a product!
Increased Costs: We know that using more to get more, naturally increases costs. The alternative here of not using more is not possible for the cost of damages, claims and replacements, not to mention unnecessary logistical costs, makes the increased use of bubble wrap justified for such purposes.
Inefficiency: The added effort to offer slightly more than surface-level protection results in the packer needed to spend more time securing and protecting that very same product for shipping. Overtime is a common enough occurrence for warehouse and fulfillment personnel!
